Hutnik

Vehicle No: A11 “Hutnik”               

Ex Polish Steelworks 0-6-0 side tank

Built: Poland 1954                              

Class: series T3A, Ferrum 47,

Works No: 3138.                                 

0-6-0T

In use at HUTA POKÓJ S.A. , Ul. Niedurnego 79, 41-709 Ruda Śląska, Poland, until summer 1992, imported to the UK by the AFR-S (formerly AFRPS) in December 1992, and first used in summer 1993.


 

No 54

Vehicle No: 54 / 22                           

Built: Andrew Barclay and Sons, Kilmarnock, 1952     

Class: 14inch AB latter style saddle tank.

Works No: 2320.                                 

0-4-0ST

Used first by National Coal Board (NCB), East Hetton Colliery, Sedgefield, County Durham, 10th Jan 1952, initially numbered No. 54. latterly renumber no22 at Fishbourne Coke Works, in 1973 it moved to Blackhall Colliery. Now preserved under private ownership, she is operational and on loan to the AFR-S.

 

No 8

Vehicle No: 8                                        

Built: Andrew Barclay and Sons, Kilmarnock,1955      

Class: 16" 0-4-0 Saddle Tank. (Later style of cab and tank with other detail modifications - these were collectively known as "Prototypes").

Works No: 2369.

The last 16in 0-4-0ST saddle tank built by the Kilmarnock firm of Andrew Barclay & Sons Ltd. Delivered to the Scottish Region of the National Coal Board (NCB) as the last New steam locomotive they bought.

Privately purchased for preservation in 1982, No8 returned to steam at the Derwent valley railway in 2005, and ran till withdrawal in 2008. in 2017 she moved to the AFR-S when her heavy overhaul began.

 

Colliery Allocations:

1960 - Kames Colliery.

1961 - Lugar Central Workshops.

May 1963 - Bank & Knockshinnoch Castle Collieries.

1966 - Lugar Central Workshops.

June 1968 - Barony Colliery.

July 1973 - Barony Withdrawn Machinery Store.

Preservation:

September 1982 - Purchased privately from the NCB and moved to ex-British Railways Dairycoates Depot, Hull. Overhaul commenced.

Approx 1991 - Moved to the Derwent Valley Light Railway, Murton, York.

1994 - Overhaul completed. Locomotive returned to steam.

Jan 2002 - Withdrawn for ten-yearly boiler examination and re-tube.

December 2005 - Returned to steam.

January 2009 - Withdrawn from traffic after repairs to axleboxes found to be required. This was worse than expected, developing into a major overhaul.

October 2017 - Moved to AFR-S at Scunthorpe where the overhaul continues.

Nechelles  No.1

Built for work at the Birmingham power station of the City of Birmingham Electric Company and named Nechelles No 1. The city of Birmingham had its own electricity power station until 1947 when the industry was nationalised.

In 1970 the locomotive was transferred to the Northampton power station which was part of the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) at which time she was regarded as the stand by engine but it remained there until 1975 when it was withdrawn from service.

The locomotive was acquired by the a private owner and moved to the  AFR-S where she was restored to operate tours and visiting heritage railways. She is currently under heavy overhaul


 

Arnold Machin

Built: Yorkshire engine company 1958

Location: AFR-S

Rolls Royce C6 supercharged with BTH Traction motor and generator. She was built for the Eccles slag company and named after then director. She was then transferred to the owner at the same site East coast slag company in 1978, santon works. She was eventually stored at some point between the 80s and 90s before joining the AFRPS in the later 1991. She is currently under overhaul at the AFR-S Scunthorpe.

Location: AFR-S

Twin engine rolls Royce C6 turbocharged 220HP with GEC traction motors and generators. Locomotive 2877 was built by the Yorkshire  engine company, a subsidiary of the united steels company, in 1963, for the Appleby Frodingham works part of Scunthorpe steelworks. Under the many company changes under british steel and Corus, she was eventually donated to the AFRPS with components from other scrap locomotives to enable her to be completed and returned to operation in 2010. She was returned to her original Appleby Frodingham apple green livery and gold leaf sign writing, and has been in use as the main backup locomotive for any railtours. 

 

No 58 / 402

Built: Hunslet 1976

Location: AFR-S

Hunslet locomotive 7409 of 1976 was built for the workington steelworks and numbered as 402. The only one of 3 Hunslets to be fitted with a radiator heat shield she can be seen working the hot metal areas in several photos. eventually with the British rail removing the 08 for shunting the works sidings, she was returned to Hunslet jacks lane for a rebuild, being fitted with a Cummins engine, and additional large compressor and fitted with train air brake controls. Upon closure of Workington, 402 was brought to Scunthorpe. she was fitted with a heat shield to the rear of the locomotive, and Scunthorpe style lights fitted, and renumbered as 58. After several failures and repairs, 58 was retired, and donated to the AFR-S.

After several years, 58 has now completed her light overhaul and is back in service

 

Horsa

Built: W.G. Bagnall / Robert Stephenson Hawthorn 1962

Location: AFR-S

Built to a Bagnall design,  but constructed at the Darlington works of Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns Ltd, after both firms were taken over by English Electric. Built for the CEGB power station at Richborough in Kent and was named Horsa with her twin sister Hengist. Later it went to Bedford power station. She then passed into preservation,  being purchased for the Nene Valley Railway at Peterborough. During its time at the Nene Valley it starred in the James Bond film “Octopussey”. Eventually she was sold on to the Great Eastern Traction group in the early 1990s and went to County School station to haul the first passenger trains. She passed into the ownership of the AFRPS in 2019 and is undergoing overhaul.

Location: AFR-S

Delivered in 1986 as a 2 car unit, 144017 ran local services in the Scunthorpe area and across the Leeds Lines. Later the 3rd centre car was added to the unit.

After withdrawl and storage at the Keithley and Worth valley railway in 2020, the unit arrived under her own power with her private owner in the same year,  who then sold the unit to the AFRPS in 2021.
